My Grandfather 4317-GILBERT CEA (1KDG), enlisted in the "Corp of Dragoons of the Line" in London on 6 September 1898.

On his Army Form B. 265 (Short Service), he also listed the 2nd Tower Hamlets - Royal Engineers (Volunteers) as his prior unit.

I have not been able to find much info on this particular unit, but there is some info on other Tower Hamlet units. It seems there were many thousands of Londoners in these local units during the late 1800's.

Can anyone point me towards other research sources that might be of assistance to me in finding out more about the unit.

For family history purposes, I am after his regimental no, uniform style, rank, military activities (parades, annual camps, etc). My father - his son - apparently never had any idea that his father was in the Tower Hamlets unit, although he was well aware of his post Boer War London Territorial Army 6 year enlistment.

We are visiting London in Sep/Oct 2013, but would prefer to do as much research via the internet from Australia.

Thanks
