Hi , new to site and hoping someone out there can lead me in right direction. I've recently started tracing a family member who fought in the boer war and records show was retired as invalid. Is there any way of tracing a hospital or place soldiers were treated ?

Really appreciate any info

Hi QSAMIKE , On his medal he is Private J.Spence, i think the J was for james however his roll call has him just as J . His regiment was the 1st Border Regiment and his number was 362 . He received clasps for service in Transvaal , relief of lady smith, orange free state, Tugela Heights and Cape colony.

appreciate any feed back and direction on how to start looking into this. It's a shame that most typical families have had grandfathers uncles etc see service in wars mostly forgotten, but by the time someone is captivated and wanting to learn more, most family leads and stories are gone with the generation that was affected.

Good afternoon,
Spence was also entitled to the South Africa 1901 clasp, this is shown in WO100/186 page 351, he is not on the published casualty rolls, so I would suggest that he was invalided because of illness, a common way home, would be via Wynberg hospital, a hospital ship back to Great Britain and then a spell at Netley hospital.
However, to answer your question, any details of medical issues that have survived will be shown in any service papers which may have also survived.
Most, but certainly, by no means all, are available on line, the originals however, again if they have indeed survived will be found at the TNA Kew in London, in WO97 and WO364, you might also look in WO363 as well.
Spence is a fairly common name, so his year and place of birth is needed to narrow the field somewhat, if you know it that is.
Anyway, good luck with any research you do
Kind regards Frank
