Thank you for the posts in this thread, and for the extracts from contemporary newspapers in other threads. There is a lot to be said for reading 'history in the making'.

Good evening David,
I do hope that when "Pushful Joe" walked along that virulent, relentless, bitterly contested ridge, from Wagon Hill to Caesar's Camp, he took a few moments of reflection because that bit of land was washed with so much blood of his own countrymen, the latter, for me, at least, is and will always remain, forever part of Manchester.
