As if to support Brett's earlier suggestion, I came across this obituary from The Times on 14 Dec 1904 for Capt S E Craig.

The obituary contains information about him that was not included in the VC & DSO book, which said:

CRAIG, S E, Lieutenant, served in the South African War, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 19 April, 1901]: "S E Craig, Lieutenant, Loch's Horse. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa". The Insignia were presented by the King 25 July 1901.

Here is the obituary:

His DCM is listed in the DCM book so presumably he received both decorations?

David

David,
It strikes me that much could be added to the official notification of the award of a DSO or DCM if only obituaries or press notices could be accessed.
Even the established reference books can be of little use in many respects.
Is it possible to trawl through obituaries on a name basis? Other than Who Was Who entries.
I am putting togther a post on Maxwell, DSO and illustrating how a little reading can add greatly to our depth of knowledge of the services of the person.
Regards
IL.

I happen to have the medals to Capt. Stuart Edwin Craig. (Loch's Horse)
They comprise the DSO,DCM,QSA and KSA.

When I acquired them, I thought researching him would be relatively simple, but initially I could find out very little.
However, by various twists of fate, I now know quite a bit, but one fact still baffles me.

(His brother was Frank Craig, the illustrator in The Graphic newspaper.)

Where is he buried ?

He died on 29 November 1904 in Piddington, near Bicester.

Could any members help with this information ?

Regards
Adrian

I share Ian's sentiments. Here, for example, is an account of the action for which Trooper Picton, Loch's Horse, undoubtedly received his D.C.M. He subsequently lost it after being embroiled in the Breaker Morant/Bushveldt Carbineers affair. From the Lincolnshire Chronicle 27 November 1900.

Justin's post 14591 is exactly the type of reference I was referring to. This type of research not only adds to our knowledge of the man himself but it gives us the contemporary view.

Hi, I appreciate this is an old post - but I did a search on Stuart E Craig yesterday and came across this forum and this post specifically. I was in Brookwood Cemetery and sat next to his headstone. Appreciate your query on where he was buried has no doubt been answered- but just in case. Brookwood Cemetery in Surrey.
