While visiting Holy Trinity Church in Langdale, in the Lake District, I came across a headstone for the Shepherd family. Part of the inscription read:

Edward Shepherd
R.H.A. Regimental Sergeant Major
who died at Naawpoort
March 1st 1901, aged 37 years

(The '7' in 37 isn't very clear, it could possibly be another number, and 'Naawpoort' is usually spelt Naauwpoort)

Does anyone know, or would like to speculate, if he died of illness or as the result of an action?

Hi BerniceUK
Find My Past shows him as died of disease.
He is also commemorated at St James's Park north-east corner, The Royal Artillery Memorial
The Mall London.

Paul

Thanks, Paul. It was such an interesting find in a rural churchyard that I was curious to know the answer. Actually, there's also a memorial plaque inside the church to the ten named members of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the Border Regiment who served in South Africa between 1900 and 1902. No fatalities mentioned.
