Although my main interest in military history is the conflicts of Continental Europe (1848 to 1914) when I started to research my relatives involvement in the Boer War a friend lent me his copy of 'Private Tucker's Boer War diary:
the Transvaal War of 1899, 1900, 1901 & 1902 with the Natal Field Forces'.
It gave me an insight into the conflict given I knew very little about the war other than what I learned for my O level history exam and the Scramble for Africa! I would recommend this book to anyone like me that doesn't have a vast knowledge of the ABW.

Roy,

Thank you for the recommendation. I haven't read that one and must add it to my pile.

With thanks

It was a good for me given I don't have a great depth of knowledge about the ABW - Pte Tucker gives a day by day account from joining his old rifle reg't and being posted to SA. the book has lots of illustration but I am sure you'll have already send them in other publications. And like a good Englishman the weather features large in his diary entries - I wasn't aware it was so wet and cold during Oct to Jan in SA

However , what I found sad when reading this book was mistakes made during the ABW seem to have repeated themselves during the Great War!

Pte Tuckers service records are viewable on the ancestry website his service number is 802 and was in the rifle brigade
