Dear All

Here is an interesting group to a civilian in the Army Service Corps

SAGS medal bar 1879 Tpr R Farrell 1st Cape Yeory
QSA - bars Cape Colony OFS Transvaal - Condr R Farrell ASC
KSA - no bar - Hd Condtr R Farrell ASC

I always thought that these guys got no bar QSA's and KSA's. Am I wrong?

Kind regards

Munroe

Hi Munroe

That is a nice group, is it one of yours? I want!

It depends is the answer. Civilian Conductors were meant to get no bars. So could he have been part of the army, then moved to be a contractor role? Could it have been an administrative oversight?

Could he have earned the bars with another unit but his QSA is named to the last unit he served in, being the ASC?

Cheers
Ryan

WO100/216 page 249 confirms a medal only, for service with "37 B Coy ASC" issued on the 14th of October 1909, the clasps Cape Colony, Transvaal and Rhodesia have been crossed through as are almost all others on this page.
His no clasp KSA is shown in WO100/350 page 315 for service with 58 Coy ASC, in addition, the remarks column shows 7 Coy ASC.

Hi

The bars on the QSA are perfect. No sign of them being added. The medals came from the family as is.

Could it be that he earned these off another unit?

Interesting guy this

I have other pairs to the ASC with both the QSA and KSA without bars.

Kind regards

Munroe

Hello,
I could not see another likely match, if the clasp rivets are correct and from the mint, have a close look at the rod that connects the lower holes on the first clasp with the medals suspension, that too, of course can also be the original having been replaced back in position by someone who knows their trade.

Again, does it really matter, bought from the family and as worn by the recipient, no, I'd be very happy with them if I were you, moreover, don't think of me as trying to kill them, I am not, I do like them.

Kind regards Frank
