Hello,
just joined the website. I am interested in finding out what happened to the families and surviving soldiers after the war. This is particularly in relation to the support they received whether from pensions, charities or indeed if they received nothing. If anyone has any knowledge of this I would be really pleased to hear from them.

Many thanks,

Jane Robinson

Hello Jane and welcome to the forum.

You pose and interesting question and one I am not sure I can answer.

Soldiers at the end of their service were discharged to pension but I am unsure about the amounts involved.

There were several charities set up during the war to help soldiers but I think these were more focussed on the widows and orphans than the soldiers themselves.

I'll see what I can find.

Best wishes
David

Jane,

I found this article which sets out the different rates of pay in the British Army in 1900:

From The Courier and Argus (Dundee, Scotland), Friday, January 05, 1900

When the Imperial Yeomanry was being raised in early 1900, the subject of pay arose:

From Cheshire Observer, Saturday, January 06, 1900

I came across a court case of an ex-soldier of 21 years service. The article reported his pension to be 1s per day. [The Weekly Standard and Express (Blackburn, England), Saturday, January 06, 1900]

Here's a link to the Manual of Military Law from 1907 which may contain the information you require. It is 844 pages in length.

Best wishes
David

Jane,

From The Sheffield & Rotherham Independent, Wednesday, January 10, 1900, there was a report of a new separation allowance:
