A particularly sad category of "spies" were the Boers on commando who donned items of British uniform to replace their own worn-out clothing. Because the wearing of British uniforms had on occasions been done with the intent to deceive and had fatal consequences for some British soldiers, the order went out that all Boers wearing British uniforms were to be court martialled as spies and shot, even if there was no intention to deceive.
