The drummer was probably more fortunate that the Trooper of the Natal Mounted Police, who in January 1879 was out on patrol with the Colonials in search of the Zulu army. He accidentally discharged his revolver and, even though the bullet did not hit anyone, he was sent back in disgrace to the camp at Isandlwana. He was killed the next day when the Zulu army attacked and overran the camp in one of the most notable battles of the Victorian era.
