Dear members,

I’m working on a collection of accounts by Russian travellers who visited South Africa. One of them was Evgeniy Avgustus who fought in the Krugersdorp commando as a volunteer. In his account, he mentions several volunteers from France and Germany, without giving their names, and I would like to identify them in the commentary.

Could you possibly let me know who has done research on participation of Germans and French in the war on the Boer side?

I would be very grateful for your assistance.

When I was an undergraduate (some years ago!) I wrote a paper on the foreign volunteers and made a card index of all the names I came across.

Did you come across the name Wagner? He was a Bavarian premierlieutenant and served in the Krugersdorp commando in 1900.

Apparently, before the war, Wagner, was with the Horse Artillery detachment of the 5th Royal Bavarian Field Artillery ‘King Alfons XIII of Spain’ regiment.

There's a book on Russian involvement in the Boer War - I presume you have it?
