Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am researching George Donald McMahon King who was apparently took part in the Defence of Kimberley. He was billeted with Herbert Payne married to Hilda Clark, and married her sister, Florence May. He was 'with a Big Gun'. I am trying to find out what regiment he served in. There is a G B King in the Diamond Fields Artillery with a clasp for the Defence of Kimberley and any number of refs to G King in Royal Field Artillery Medal Rolls, but none have clasps for Defence of Kimberley. How do I know what regiment he was in? The King was discharged from the DFE in August 1900, might he have transferred to the RFA after the Relief of Kimberley. He married in South Africa and remained in Cape Town for some weeks before returning to his home town. If he was in the Diamonds Fields Artillery, described as a local volunteer regiment, would this indicate he was resident in SA at the outbreak of War? Were soldiers billetted with locals in the Defence of Kimberley? The family recall him mentioning being at Mafeking too, but none of the G King refs on Ancestry or Anglo-Boer War websites show a clasp for this.
How can I find out where he actually belongs?
