After many years in southern Africa I am now living in Stockholm, Sweden, where I am now involved, since many years, in research of the rather un-common subject of Swedes and other Scandinavians in southern Africa during the 19th Century.
There were quite a lot of Swedes who often stayed and in some cases had important roles in the development of the country. The grandfather of Louis Trichard, Carl Gustaf Trägårdh came from southern Sweden on the VOC, Andries Stockenström's father
also came out with the VOC, born on the south west coast of Sweden.
And then, of course, the Scandinavian Corps founded in Pretoria in 1899, fought at Magersfontein at the end of 1899. 67 Swedes and further Swedes both on the British side as well as the German Corps.
I do have some material and a few photos from the Scandinavian Corps, should anyone be interested.
I came upon this web-site as I researched one particular person Hollstrand with source WO 100/279 who fought with the Cape Government Railways
How can I find further information on him?
Best regards from the winter in Sweden
