Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen......

The latest acquisition for my collection is a 6 Bar Queen's South Africa Medal to:

69 PRIVATE G. STEPHENSON, NEW ENGLAND MOUNTED RIFLES

I am having problems finding information on this unit and its history.....

Can anyone assist?

The bars on the medal: CAPE COLONY, TUGELA HEIGHTS, ORANGE FREE STATE, RELIEF OF LADYSMITH, TRANSVAAL and LAING'S NEK

I know with this combination of bars he must have served in other units as I understand that the N.E.M.R. were not formed until 1900 / 1901......

Thanks in Advance.....

Mike,

It must be rare to have a 6 clasp QSA to the NEMR. I had a look at the medal roll for the NEMR (WO100/241) where he is listed but with no details against his name. As with every entry on the page, the CC clasp is crossed through.

I had a look at the men of this name who served in the FLH, JMR, SAC and Brabant's Horse but none showed any links to the NEMR. There are men of this name in Imperial units which I have not checked but these would be less likely I think.

Presumably the clasps on the medal look OK?

Good Morning David.....

The first think that I checked was the bars and they are all officially affixed..... I agree that he may have served in an Imperial unit and took his discharge in SA..... As I have often said would it not be nice if we knew all the answers but then there would be no fun..... Will most likely have to get his documents from the SA Archives and see what he put on his enlistment documents.....
