Does anyone have a list of common abbreviations for units? My grandfather, who was with the Volunteer Coy, Durham Light Infantry, was attached to various units after a period of hospitalization while he made his way back to his own unit. From 24 to 30 June 1900 he was at Volksrust attached to a unit he refers to as "I.LeY" (my best interpretation of his handwritten diary entry - it could be I.LeV). I searched extensively but can't figure it out.

I think you might be right as there is a record of the Imperial Light Infantry being on garrison duty at Volksrust from June to October 1900.
