I have another mystery... this time involving the Dukes of Argyll.
A distant relative of mine was housekeeper to Cecil Rhodes in Kimberley. I knew her as Nanna but her surname was Bennetto (Cornish) She died in her nineties in 1952.
She was full of gossip and stories about Kimberley. She claimed that there was an Englishman living in Kimberley,a remittance man, who married a "Cornish barmaid" and had two children. Some time later he had news that he had succeeded to the Dukedom of Argyll and returned to Britain leaving wife and children behind. The wife then discovered that their marriage was not legal as they had been married by a defrocked cleric. Nevertheless, although he did not acknowledge his family, he provided for them and they were privately educated.
I have done some research, and the only Duke of Argyll who may fit the picture is Niall Campbell the 10th Duke.
Anyone able to throw light on this story....or is it just a story?
I should have added that she was Rhodes' housekeeper during the siege of Kimberley.
