I originally posted this under the thread Intombi but moved it here as a separate thread......

Good Morning Everyone.....

Have a question for you?????

I have a single clasp QSA (Defence of Ladysmith) to a member of the Border Mounted Rifles.....

He died of enteric in Intombi Hospital and was buried in Intombi Cemetery.....

I have found that he was disinterred from Intombi and his remains were returned to his family.....

I wonder how often this happened ?????

Were any bodies returned to England ?????

There have been photos here of tomb / head stones with names of men who were killed in South Africa but are there bodies underneath ?????

I have a relative, a fighter pilot, who went missing flying from Malta during the siege in WW2 and has no known grave, but there is a plot in the family area with an official CWGC Canadian headstone for him.....

Hello Mike

The question of repatriation of bodies was discussed on this forum some time ago - I can't remember know who was discussed and so trawl up the thread.

There was no repatriation of bodies - but a very, very few were bought back by wealthy families.

Who is your medal to? Perhaps he was reburied in Natal?

Hello Mike

I am sure you've checked Steve Watt's In Memoriam, no indication of a reinternment there.

Where was he re-buried?

Mike

Lesley Seton Melville's Death Notice (MSCE, 10/17, 1900/1903), and a file about his death in Ladysmith initiated by the Adjutant, BMR (NT, T1332/1900), are in the Pietermaritzburg Repository of the SA National Archives. Although they may not refer to his re-interment, there should be mention on his home address and immediate family, which could lead to further avenues for research.

Brett

Good Morning Meurig......

I just have a faint hand written note in pencil stating, "Trooper Melville Claimed by Family, Moved" in the notes that I have from a previous collectors research ......

Moved to new location within cemetery, moved from cemetery to new cemetery I do not know.....
