During the Boer War, the staple of the diet of Boers on commando, as well as some South African Colonials, was biltong, which is dried beef or game meat that has an indefinite 'shelf life'.

Biltong and its many national variants probably is widely known in the world today, but it was not always so. Many years ago, as a special treat, a South African sent a parcel of biltong to friends in Britain. About six months later, the friends wrote to say that, although the biltong had been planted with great care and subsequent attention, it had failed to germinate.

Regards
Brett
