Here are some letters that were printed in the West Cumberland Times.

From Private R L Elliot of Workington, 1st Bn Manchester Regiment.

Good to see that your time going through the newspaper files has been productive. Interesting that the newspaper refers to him as Pvt. rather than Pte. 'Pvt.' usually seems to be thought of as being an American abbreviation.

Perfectly normal, in actual battle, the enemy had absolutely no answer whatsoever to the bayonet, it normally compelled them to merely seek an immediate and very urgent appointment elsewhere! :)
A troopers lance usually had much the same effect!
However, under these circumstances, sadly not unique either, a bayonet was the way to go in my opinion, I have absolutely no sympathy whatsoever!
Robert Elliot was certainly very typical of Colonel Curran's men.

I hadn't noticed that Bernice one to show Owen I think he will hate it .
I have researched up till the end of December from early September very hard going but I will carry on.

Ps I do have a letter from lance corporal Frank Mortimer who is remembered in Cockermouth cemetery, as I have photos of his headstone I would like to make a separate thread on him so what section is best to make a new thread on him please.
