by one of H. Samuel's Watches!

A T COLENSO,

S PION KOP,
AND THE
R ELIEF OF LADYSMITH

The following letter just received from South
Africa clearly proclaims the VAST SUPERIORITY
of H. Samuel's Watches as EXCELLENT TIME-
KEEPERS in extemes of temperature, or under the
most trying conditions, and relates how the writer was
S AVED FROM A MAUSER BULLET
by one of H. Samuel's Watches.
Ladysmith, March 31st 1900.

H. SAMUEL.
Dear Sir, Please send me one of your Silver Lever
Watches. I had one from you about 20 months ago,
and it gave every satisfaction, which is saying a lot,
for the other watches out here with the troops have
gone wrong. In the relief of Ladysmith a Mauser
bullet went clean into it (while it was in my belt)
through the back case. It has been with me through
the battles of Colenso, Spion Kop, and the relief of
Ladysmith. I am, dear sir, yours truly,
(Signed). W. HOWE,
H Company, 2nd Royal Fusiliers,
Field Force, Natal.

What a great advertisement for the resilience of their watches!

The original was really hard to read so your transcription was much appreciated :)

Cynical me can't help wondering if sometimes soldiers used to try it on with letters like this.
