PAGE, J. C., of the staff, until recently squadron sergeant-major, was born in India. He was formerly squadron sergeant-major of the 10th Hussars, with which body he saw active service in the Soudan and on the Nile expedition, and now wears the Egyptian clasp. He is an expert swordsman, and said to be the best in Canada. An all-round athlete, and a proficient gymnast, he is considered on of the finest military instructors and soldiers in Canada, and very popular amongst the men. Shath Square of Thurlestone, Kingsbridge, South Devonshire, England, was an officer in the 5th Devonshire Volunteers for 25 years and possesses a long service medal. Stone-Clarkson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and was a member of the Royal Scots Greys for nine years and for several years was connected with the 90th Battalion of Winnipeg. He played in the 90th band here for some time, and is well know in Winnipeg. Mr. Tryon is an Englishman and a member of the Church of England. He was educated at Marlborough College, where he learnt his first drill and was A1 at gymnastics. He has been a coffee planter in Ceylon, and has been 16 years in the Northwest, he was a private in Francis' Scouts during the Northwest Rebellion, and has explored the Peace River district. Mr. Tryon comes of a family that has produced distinguished fighters in both arms of the service. The late Gen. Tryon was his uncle, and the late Admiral Tryon was his cousin. WOODS, ROBERT A., was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and his parents now live in Detroit, Michigan. He is 22 years of age and has been a cowboy on the Montana ranges for two years. Private, Regimental Number 334, 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles, Queen's South Africa Medal - Clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg and Diamond Hill. Died of Pneumonia at Canarvon, April 23rd, 1900, on Memorial located at the Cathedral of the Redeemer, Calgary, Alberta

The following volunteers were listed in newspapers as having joined up but I have not been able to locate any further information on them. They are not listed in the official medal roll as being awarded any Queen's South African War medal.

BARRY, E.E., son of John Barry of 19 Charville Road, Dublin, Ireland, is a boilermaker's helper by trade, is and ex-N.W.M.P., and also served in the Manitoba Dragoons, a member of the Church of England, 28 years of age, weighs 175 lbs, is 6 ft. 2 1/2 in. high, and measures across the chest 35 1/4 to 40 3/4 inches.

DUPRE, C.E., a cousin of the late renowned General Gordon who met his tragic end at Khartoum several years ago. He was a member of the North West Mounted Police for three years. During his service in the Mounted Police he spent a year in the Yukon and is well accustomed to that sort of life that service in South Africa will demand. His age is 27 years.

GERARD, G.V., a French Canadian and Roman Catholic, teamster, learned drill at school, has been a cowboy, is 22 years of age 5 ft. 8 in. height, weighs 168 lbs., and measures at chest 37 1/2 to 39 in.

KERR, ARCHIBALD, of Prince Albert and Edmonton, a native of St. Thomas, Ontario, member of the Church of England, and a teamster and was cook on the Indian Commission, is 36 years of age, 5 ft. 6 ins. high, weighs 156 lbs., and has a chest measurement of 34 1/2 to 37 ins.

McDONALD, COLIN, of Wolsely, is a son of J. A. McDonald, of Moose Jaw, and is a Canadian and a member of the Church of England, He is a farmer, is 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, weighs 150 pounds and has a chest measurement of 37 inches.

RIOUX, GEORGE, joined the R.C.D.'s two weeks ago. He was born in Port Arthur, Ontario, and is son of Joseph Rioux of that place. He has been employed as a miner and prospector in Rat Portage and vicinity.

STODDART, J., is a "Rough Rider" and was born in Beaverton, Ontario. His father, Mr. L. Stoddart, lives at St. Charles, Manitoba.

Mike, I agree with Mark. I have the impression that researching Canadian (and Australian) participants in the Boer War is, in general, easier and more rewarding than researching those from South Africa. Does anyone else share this opinion?

Brett, I should think so. Can't claim to have really done any ABW research on Canadians but a little on Australians who served in both the ABW and WWI. The Australian Archives are an absolute pleasure compared to archives in South Africa.
