I have read in Churchill's book (London to Ladysmith) in which he mentions Bicyclists from the Natal Volunteers used for reconnaissance. How effective were Cyclists in the Boer War? Any notable successes? Besides in Natal, where else were they used?

Tim,

That's a good question and I'm not sure how effective they were. Besides Natal, there were certainly used in Cape Colony with their own unit, the Cape Colony Cyclist Corps.

In case you have not seen this page, there are a few images of cyclists here: www.angloboerwar.com/other-information/1...mation/2003-bicycles

Best wishes

Don't forget Churchill's daredevil cycle from Doornkop with Hamilton's official despatches through the middle of 'Boer' Johannesburg to Roberts at Elandsfontein the day before Johannesburg was surrendered.

Cheers,

Mark
