Can you please help. I am trying to find out about my grandfather John William Millington born 1880, in Abram, Hindley, Lancashire. I have been told he served in the Boer War but not what or where he was. At the time he was living in Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire as far as I can make out.

There are a number of Millington's that all seem to come from various parts of Lancashire, but, not with that exact name, it would certainly be worth you looking in detail at every John Millington/William Millington, using your known basic family details as a guide, in WO97/WO363 and so on, to see if his papers have survived, the man below is not an exact match from the information you have given.

Most, though certainly not all, are available on line via ancestry/fmp, the actual papers are at Kew and are available whilst actually there, but, you should note WO363 cannot be searched manually because of it's condition, only the same folio are available.
