Hello, the service record of Richard Wakeley (Kings Shropshire Light Infantry) says he was mentioned in Earl Roberts' despatch of 2nd April 1901. So far, I have not been successful in confirming this. Can anyone tell me is it possible to obtain a copy of Lord Roberts' actual despatch? Thanks.

The despatches were published in the London Gazette, so the answer to your question is yes, it is certainly possible.

Just now I dug out my copy of Army "mentions" and amongst Lord Roberts' mentions of Sept. 4 1901 is "L/Cpl R.Wakeley" of the Shropshire Light Infantry. The 2/SLI were present at Paardeburg, Poplar Grove, Dreifontein, Houtnek, Zand River, 1st DeWet Hunt, Belfast, Helvetia, etc.
A "mention" in despatches means recognition by a senior officer for Gallantry or Meritorious Service. I don't know if the SLI had a Regimental History published covering their time in SA. If so, you might care to check it for any further info on L/Cpl. R.Wakeley.
Best of luck with your research

Hi
This may save you time to trace the relevant pages of 2 London Gazette issues in which Wakeley was mentioned
LG 10/09/1901 p5947 Roberts : up to end Nov 1900
LG 29/07/1902 p4846 Kitchener : Final Despatch 23 June 1902

Many thanks to all for impressively swift responses. I have now downloaded the appropriate pages of the London Gazette. I am researching Richard on behalf of his grandson (and my brother-in-law). I have helped my sister to order copy medals as a surprise Christmas present. The 1902 mention has Richard as a Sergeant, although it could be a mistake: I can find nothing in his record that has him higher than Corporal, and that is the rank we had stamped on his copy medals. Hope I haven't cocked up!
Thanks once again.
Regards,
