Surname never changed over the centuries! Obviously whern writing in black ink the name Byrom was inadvertently re-recorded as Brown.I can send a photo of the medals which have his name and number 5666 inscribed on the side. Pte J. Byrom with correct spelling.Thank you for your assistance, greatly appreciated.

It looks like the error perpetuated itself through to his service with the Pietersburg LH. WO100/263 shows "623 Trooper Joseph Brown" and notes him as "TMI trooper 5666" and also in Western LH as number 627.

Interesting this, would be good to see the medal inscription to see if it is a late issue/officially corrected.

What surname did he enlist with? WO127 - Discharge books shows him as "Joseph Brown".

I would get a copy of his attestation form, if it survives. These are in the National Archives, London. I can give you an email address of a researcher who has copies of many of these forms - please pm me.

The reference to the Western Light Horse is incorrect on the medal roll. 'Joseph Brown' on the Western Light Horse for the KSA shows clearly - "this man did not serve in TMI".

"Rhyll" - could this be a typo for "Rhyl" which is in North Wales?
