An unusual item on eBay.

The text in the frame says:

Whitehall Theatre of War
London War Museum
14 Whitehall
London SW1

The inkwells here are made from the hooves of an Artillery horse who served during the Boer War of 1899- 1902.

He was a gelding called Prince, he was so fondly remembered for his loyal service that his hooves were made into these inkwells. With even the shoes being made from solid silver. Inscribed with the epitaph.. Prince 1897 - 1911.

I have seen a couple of similar examples over the last few years; to other horses present in noteworthy times, 1899-1892. They do have immediacy - however I shudder at the thought of trying to get them past Customs here. They even help up my little barrel made from the wood of HMS "TERRIBLE".
Regards
IL.

Some years ago I saw a similar inkwell made from the Hoof of Lord Robert's Horse "Twist". Not as famous as "Vonolel" that carried Roberts through Afghanistan but still an interesting if macabre souvenir.
Looking for Salutries, Salootries and Veterinary Duffadars.
I collect primarily QSAs to Indian Recipients.
