Although nearly a month had passed since the Siege was lifted, poor Bella's tribulations had continued. Bert did recover and it was only fitting that the couple should marry later - a short marriage that ended in Bella's death in childbirth.

Bella was one of the truly tragic figures to have served so faithfully when war came to Natal.
