Has anyone ever seen this book before? A friend kindly gave me a copy dated 1908 which contains, when it comes to the Boer War, only rudimentary details up to and including the battle of Paardeberg. I quite liked the reference to the "Third Boer War"

Was this the last officially recognised battle of the Boer War?

The last "officially recognised" battle of the Boer War would have to be "Belfast'; 26-27th August, 1900. The clasp for that action was awarded to troops who on the indicated dates were East of a North/South line drawn through Wonderfontein and West of a North/South line through Dalmanutha Station and North of an East/West line through Carolina. The garrison and troops quartered at Wonderfontein on those dates did not receive the clasp. Phew! I bet a few officers were scratching their heads over those territorial qualifications.
In some respects, the battle of Paardeberg appears to have been unique in that the qualification for the clasp included between midnight 7/2/00 and 26/2/00 being within 7,000 yards of General Cronje's final laager and within the same distance of Koodoe's Rand Drift.

The second would be 1880-81, as for the "first", not sure as the British fought voortrekkers at Boomplaats in 1848 and early Boer settlers in Natal at Congella in 1842. Would be interesting to see what the book says.

Meurig, when this subject came up a few months ago, Henk reminded us of the occupations of the Cape by the British during the Napoleonic Wars (1797 and 1806, as I remember it). I suppose the problem with adding them to the list of Anglo-Boer Wars, like Boomplaats and Natal 1842, is that of a matter of scale. However, the 2nd Occupation of the Cape, Boomplaats and the battle, siege and relief at Port Natal did have very profound effects on the history of South Africa.
