"NAVAL CAPTAIN FOUND SHOT.
The death has occurred at Southampton of Captain Anthony F. Gurney, R.N., of the Manor House, Swaffham, Norfolk, the unfortunate gentleman being found in his bedroom at the hotel where he was staying, fatally shot. Deceased served as a midshipman in the Temeraire at the bombardment of Alexandria in July, 1882, afterwards during the Egyptian War. He was Lieutenant and Commander of the Widgeon during the Boer War in 1899-1900, and was engaged in the blockade of Delagoa Bay, and successfully landed a party of Steinacker's Scouts at Kosi Bay, Amatongaland, in very difficult circumstances. He was recently commanding officer of vessels engaged in the fishery protection duties on the East Coast.
Captain Gurney received the Egyptian medal, Alexandria clasp, and the Khedive's bronze star for his services in Egypt, and the South Africa Medal for his service during the Boer War.
At the inquest the jury returned a verdict of suicide during temporary insanity."
