Fred Goulding played Rugby Union for Gloucester, and had appeared in an England trial match, before seeing active service in South Africa with the Gloucestershire Regiment, 1900-1902.

Lieutenant Frank Milligan had played cricket for Yorkshire, and twice for England, and was killed in action at Ramathlabama, on 31st March 1900. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Milligan

Thomas Crean and Robert Johnson were members of the 1896 British Isles rugby team that toured South Africa. They settled in South Africa, and both enlisted in the Imperial Light Horse after the Boer War started. They were both awarded the Victoria Cross.

Hi
Laurens Smitz Meintjes (1868-1941) the first South African athlete who has a green vest in a foreign country. Meintjes in 1893 prevailed in the cycling world championships in Chicago. He did not represent South Africa officially , but his club, the Wanderers' Amateur Cycling Club.

F. E. 'Fred' Bacon was an English middle-distance runner and briefly held the amateur world record for the mile.

In February 1900, it was reported in the press that he had been called up as a reservist, and was going out to South Africa as officer's servant for Major Henderson, of the Manchester Regiment.
