"Thomas Griffin, aged 25, an ex-soldier of the Scottish Borderers, who fought in South Africa, has been agreeably surprised by an intimation through a London firm of solicitors that a Boer lady intends to reward his kindness to her by sending him between £300 and £400.
Griffin informed a newspaper representative that he only gave his coat to the lady, who was with a large number of refugees in an uncovered train. He pitied her, especially because she had two small children, one suffering from enteric. A storm was coming on at the time, and the lady, who was a veldt cornet's wife, thanked him in Dutch and made him understand that she wanted his name and address. The only things he had were a jack-knife, which he used to open bully-beef tins with, and his identity card, which he gave her. When the storm came on he got drenched, but he thought nothing of it."
The County Observer and Monmouthshire Advertiser, Saturday 1st June 1907

An interesting find.

Can't identify this man, there is a 5627 T Griffin marked on the rolls as "deceased" - no papers and not on the casualty rolls or not in Soldier's Effects
