Capt George Francis Archdale, 3 Vol Bn, Norfolk Regt and 1 Vol Service Coy, Norfolk Reg died without ever leaving England. He is commemorated on the county’s Boer War Memorial and on the memorial plaque to the Volunteers in the Cathedral but did not receive the Queen’s South Africa Medal. He is not listed in the Last Post. He is buried in Coltishall where there is a memorial to him on the church wall.
He was arguably the first casualty of the 1st VSC and its most senior in rank. Archdale went to Wellington College and became was a partner in the Hogge and Sepping brewing company. His father was Maj CW Archdale of 6 (Aylsham) Coy, Norfolk Volunteer Rifles. George Archdale was a crack shot befitting the captain, for several years, of the Norfolk Volunteers’ China Cup team. He attended the 12 January 1900 at the meeting in Norwich of all four colonels of the Vol Bn at which he was appointed commander of the 1 Volunteer Service Coy. On 27 January Capt Archdale attended the service in Norwich Cathedral for the departing Yeomanry. The men of the Volunteer Service Company begun to muster at the Britannia Barracks, Norwich on 29 January. Archdale quickly fell ill with influenza and was unable to appear for a 1 VSC team photograph taken on 10 February. He died in the Barracks, on 23 February. He was 34. If you have an image of Archdale, his grave or his memorial that you would be willing to share, I would be keen to see them A younger brother of George, Pte Charles William Archdale 6393, (Queens South Africa Medal with three clasps) served in 44 Squadron, 12th Imperial Yeomanry, formed in Norwich by JR Bob Harvey then a major in the Norfolk Squadron, Loyal Suffolk Hussars. His troopship sailed 3 February and so he was far from home when his brother died. Pte Archdale’s time in South Africa must surely have been melancholy. After reenlisting early in WW1, Private Charles William Archdale, Public Schools Special Corps, was commissioned into 5 Norfolks, effectively his father’s and his brother’s unit, 19 November 1914. Capt Archdale, 5 Bn attached 7 Bn, Norfolk Regt was killed on Tuesday 20 November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai.

I hope to be in the Norwich area one day over Heritage Weekend, in September, and the church is 'open to visitors,' so fingers crossed for the last two.

There is definitely a story about the WIR in St Helena.
Henk posted: Two Companies of the 1st West India Regiment served on St Helena between Sept 1900 and January 1901. However, Kitchener in person did not recommend them for the QSA "in view of the circumstances of the removal of these two Companies from the island".???!!! However, almost 200 men of the 3rd Btn, West India Regiment were shown as entitled to the QSA for service on the island after 14 April 1901. Dr David Biggins

The casualty rolls list 224 men who died at sea. However it is not usually listed in which direction they were travelling.
Armed with the date of demise and the shipping records, it would be possible to identify the direction of travel. 976 Private Adey T Somerset Light Infantry Died of disease - pneumonia At Sea 09-04-1900 4467 Private Allcock Worcester Regiment Died of disease At Sea, SS Tintagel 03-01-1900 3118 Private Allison S Black Watch Died of disease - diarrhoea At Sea 24-06-1900 4905 Private Baggott J Worcester Regiment Died of disease At Sea 31-03-1900 7271 Lance Corporal Bennett A Essex Regiment Died of disease At Sea.
