Lockdales sold a 'shoebox' of maps and sketched relating to the Boer War just now. 115 in total.

They sold for nearly 3 times their estimate.

Morning Mike,

I don't think so but I am not sure. The cataloguer did not spent too much time describing them. They look like one set so my first thought was they were from Maurice's history.

I would be very interested to hear if anyone knows. I did bid for the maps as I thought they would be great on the site but then the price started to escalate :(

David and Mike
Ages ago I did see a number of Field Intelligence Department maps in a collection. They were multi-folded into pocket book form and were cloth backed and showed evidence of much use. The maps I saw were part of a series which covered a particular district. I forget which. If the Lockdales shoebox series were original FID maps, that would explain the price.
Over the years, I have occasionally seen original individual FID maps come up on a favourite on-line site and I have missed each one!
Regards
IL.

Good Afternoon David......

I knew that I had something and therefor did some digging in some of the books that I have in storage that I don't use very much, a few including these will be coming out of storage,,,,,

What I found was 4 Volumes of fold out Maps and Sketches that were with the books entitled ”HISTORY OF THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA by MAJOR GENERAL SIR FREDERICK MAURICE K.C.B.” I do not have the books just the 4 volumes of maps and sketches..... There are a total of 116 maps etc.....

These were the ones I was thinking of in my previous post.....

I have attached a sample list of Volume 1 and will do the other 3 volumes if you wish......

Mike

Many thanks for clarifying that, Mike.

I have the four volumes but not the maps :(

I would be very interested to see what other maps are included in the set if it is not too much trouble. I will then add the information to Maurice's entry in the Book section.

With thanks
David
