An hour's off-saddle: Patrolling with Brabant's' Horse

Brabant's Horse is an irregular Volunteer corps of mounted infantry numbering 600 men. Most of the troopers supply their own horses and saddles. The men who know the country are valuable for scouting.

In the doctor's absence: A cripple's handicap open to the wounded

From a sketch by Lieutenant A J McNeill

A correspondent writes: 'Life is not entirely mournful at Wynberg Hospitsl, where our brave soldiers who have suffered are nursed, and where, of course, many are lost to us in spite of all that care and kindness and skill can do. The British propensity for sport penetrates even through the depressing surroundings of a hospital, and the other day a 'fifty yards cripples handicap' was a great success. Needless to say the race was held without the kind permission of the medical authorities'.

The light side of warfare: Drawing the enemy's fire

From a sketch by our special artist W T Maud

"During the general assault on our position on November 9' writes our Special Artist, 'the 5th Lancers were sent out to hold Observation Hill, an advanced post on the right front. The regiment have been in Natal for the last two years, and they know he ground perfectly and the best way to fight on it. Only a few of their picked shots crept to the top of the ridge, and directly they opened fire a perfect storm of Boer rifle fire burst upon them. One of the troopers put his helmet on the muzzle of his carbine and hoisted it over the edge of the rock, and whenever it appeared a hail of bullets whistled round it.'
