This thread is for those pictures from The Graphic that do not fit into any existing thread but certainly warrant recording.

'A welcome to the colonial Volunteers at Westminster Hall last Sunday

A full parade of the Corps of Commissionaires was held in Westminster Hall on Sunday when Sir Edward Walter delivered an address of welcome to the Colonial Volunteers who have returned invalided from the front, and are at present staying at the Headquarters of the Commissionaires'.

'Boer guns discovered by General French during his march through Eastern Transvaal

News was brought into camp at Piet Retief (writes a correspondent) that Boer guns were buried about three miles away. The guns when unearthed were found to have been taken to pieces and packed in different holes. They were carefully covered with tarred cloth. The howitzer limbers were full of ammunition and some ammunition was also found for the Creusot gun. The guns were not buried with their carriage and limbers but in separate holes.'

Enrolling troops for South Africa in Sydney: The rush of applicants

A correspondent writes: 'An animated scene took place the other day at the Agricultural Society's Grounds. It had been announced that Major Boam would attend the begin the enrolment of 1,000 men to form the new contingent to be sent to South Africa. As a result, Major Boam's office was besieged by a large crown of would-be recruits. The men were required to attend in uniform, and nearly every regiment in the defence force was represented in the crowd. The few police present were powerless to keep the crowd in hand and it was not until half a dozen mounted Lancers arrived that space was cleared in front of the office and order was restored.'
