I came across the above inscribed on a family gravestone in Dalry Cemetery, Edinburgh; other than family members, the only extra information was that Francis was aged 42 when he died. Presumably not a soldier, and no indication that he died during the siege, so was he a civilian who happened to die of natural causes?

Berenice
Palmer shows one "Dowie" (no forename or initial shown), a "Civilian in Military Employment" was an Engine Driver and was severely wounded at Leeuwspruit on 14/6/1900. Nothing in later quarters in SAFF as a update. So, it could be that he died later - possibly after leaving Military Employment. I had a quick look through "The Ladysmith Siege" by Lines to see of one Dowie was a resident there or otherwise served. A long shot and no result.
So our Engine Driver Dowie COULD be the man commemorated in Dairy Cemetery, Edinburgh.
Best regards
IL.

Here's the inscription and the family gravestone, in case any more info ever turns up.
