NC is a common abbreviation for the Natal Carbineers which were divided into squadrons and troops.

Definitely Natal Carbineers but could well be a shot of them in German South West Africa (WWI) - the officer seems to be wearing Boer War medal ribbons?

He looks like William Park Gray whose medals I have

Thanks Rory. Well spotted! This a section of another pic my relative had sent and I initially thought could have been after the Boer War.Thanks for your input.
