"The railway company's dredger "Pick me up," whilst carrying on dredging operations in the railway company's harbour [at Holyhead, Anglesey/Ynys Mon], picked up a soldier's coat with four medals attached. The medals were (1) South Africa, 1901-2; (2) distinguished conduct in the field; (3) Transvaal, three clasps (Driefontein, Paardeberg, Cape Colony); (4) Hazara, 1891."
The North Wales Express, 25th August 1905

Is it possible to at least identify the regiment of the soldier?

Boat services from Holyhead went to Dublin, Kingstown (now Dun Laoghaire), and Greenore on the Carlingford Lough, the latter being near Dundalk - Carlingford Lough now forming part of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland - so it would be the port for those travelling to Belfast. Mailships also used Holyhead.

Hi Berenice

It might be a start (but only a start) to narrow down the units that served in the Hazara 1891 campaign. BB&M shows the Royal Fusiliers, 1/Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 1/KRRC and 2/Seaforth Highlanders served in battalion strength. A number of other units were also represented there but only in very small numbers.

According to Abbot DCM awards for the ABW were 13 to the Royal Fusiliers, 16 to the RWF, 40 to the KRRC (4 battalions involved) and 14 to the Seaforths. None of these regiments was awarded a DCM for the Hazara 1891 campaign.

I realise that this is playing the numbers game and I'm not sure where to go from here.

Regards

David
