I was very interested yesterday when I found a Wikipedia entry for Cliviger, Lancashire, which said that "a casualty of the Boer War is buried in the old chapel graveyard in Mereclough." Now this was on Wikipedia, so you can't guarantee that anything's 100% accurate, but I double-checked and the same information came up on a local council website. Worth investigating, I thought, so off I went to Mereclough this morning, just over two miles south-east of Burnley. Four separate buses to get me there, and what a letdown.

Sergt. John Ingham (Holden)
of 1st North Stafford Regiment,
son of the above who died in the
Mauritius, South Africa,
January 22nd 1893, aged 25 years.

Disappointing, but at least it's been checked out.
