I thought this might tickle the interest of a few members....

Joseph Terpend claims to have deserted from the Boers at Dundee (see article below which appeared in the now defunct Rand Daily Mail). Tall orders were often prevalent in the "old days" before one could check up on a man's history, via the internet. In the article he claims to have been 99 in 1959 which assumes a birth date of 1860. According to his marriage certificate (also below), he was born in 1865. Interesting characters like him could be forgiven for "tampering" with the truth - after all, age is but a number!
