Michael Kaplan has just sent me some truly awful snapshots of the two cards that I thought might be duplicates:

T101 Cape Garrison Artillery cannonading the dauntless Boers across the Modder River, South Africa (Copyright 1900)

This is actually captioned "Cape Garrison Artillery making it hot for the Boers across the Modder River, South Africa" on the front, and "Cape Garrison Artillery cannonading the dauntless Boers across the Modder River, South Africa" on the back. Confirmed as a duplicate.

T122 Gen Cronje’s 4000 brave Boers after surrendering to Roberts force of 50 000 Feb 27th Paardeberg, South Africa (Copyright 1900)

This is actually captioned "General Cronje’s 4000 Boers after their surrender Feb 27th Paardeberg, South Africa" on the front and "Gen. Cronje’s 4000 brave Boers after surrendering to Roberts force of 50 000 Feb 27th Paardeberg, South Africa" on the back. Confirmed as a duplicate.

Running totals of cards and images seen in the wild and now back down to 367 titles, 372 images.

Antiquarian Auctions have two volumes of stereoscopes.

Set of 100 stereoscopic cards (180 x 90 mm) with views covering many aspects of the Anglo-Boer War. Contained in box covered in navy cloth, resembling 2 volumes of a book, spines gilt and marked volumes 1 and 2 of the Underwood Travel Library.

Each card is captioned on the front in English and on the back in English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish and Russian. Several of these also have full descriptions on the back in English.

All cards bear the marking Underwood and Underwood Publishers on the front left hand side, and on the right Works and Studio Arlington NJ and Westwood NJ. They are also stamped Sun Sculpture Trademark. The cards are in very good condition.

War correspondents and news photographers descended upon South Africa at the start of the Anglo-Boer war, among them the photographers of Underwood & Underwood. These photographers were not news photographers after sensational, gory war images, nor were they part of any pro-British or anti-Boer propaganda campaign. They stayed away from conflict zones but still captured other military related activity with their primary market, namely the American middle class in mind.

Underwood and Underwood produced sets of images in boxes made to look like a single, or a pair of books entitled: “The South African War through the Stereoscope”. These boxes were then filled with Anglo-Boer war stereo photographs pasted onto curved cardboard. More titles were added as the war progressed.

Dear Forummers

As part of research, I am looking for photographs of the Boer trench system on the upper Tugela, namely from Acton Homes to Brakfontein - and especially the trenches on Tabanyama.
I'd be very keen to have a hi-resolution scan of two stereoscope cards :
- "West from Boer intrenchments on Krantz Kloof to Spion Kop showing connecting Boer trench across the Valley, S. A."
and
"Spion Kop , where the most desperate battle of the war was fought, from Boer trenches on Krantz Kloof, S. A."
In fact, if you have photos of Boer trenches which are not marked as Colenso or Magersfontein, I'd be v interested to see them, as they may be on Tabanyama.

Many thanks! My email is [email protected]

yours
Rob
