This photo is borrowed from another site - of interest is Mr Allerston. a well-known photographer and chemist in Pietermaritzburg at the turn of the 19th century. I have his brother Frank's QSA with Elandslaagte clasp (Natal Carbineers) and WWI trio.

The photo is captioned a "Pietermaritzburg Hospital" - but this can only be Grey's, who were the only facility equipped with this sort of state-of-the-art machinery.

Albert Allerston was issued a QSA with Natal clasp off the Natal Volunteer Medical Corps roll as a Radiographer. It is not known if his medal is extant or not.

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory,

I have come across an interesting article which I will post below. The article is of 'The origins and early use of radiology in South Africa' by JC De Villiers and talks about its use during the Boer War on both the Boer and British side and the radiological services where the x-ray facilities for both sides were held and the equipment which was used.
