After searching for a good example of this tin TWO arrived at once !
As far as I understand it was the intention to send the troops a chocolate tin at Christmas 1902 but due to the likelihood of the war coming to an end a halt was placed on the proceedings.
I have seen some comments regarding the issue to wounded troops also to widows at a Christmas dinner, I believe the amount of tins issued was small and may be the reason for them being scarce.
Both of the examples in the attached photograph were found in a job lot of tins in an auction and one had a small piece of the chocolate left and the original straw like packing [ win win ], Just now need to find the elusive Devonshire regiment tobacco tin.

For those interested, further details regarding the presentation of these tins can be found here:

QUEEN ALEXANDRA CHOCOLATE TIN

You will see that I have estimated a distribution of between 700 and 800.

Orphans received toys rather than chocolate.

Just an update to this thread, I have been lucky enough to find the Devonshire tin in reasonable condition, I have also just had delivery of the Rowntree's Queen Alexandra 1902 tin complete with it's chocolate both nice additions to the collection.
