Hiya Guys,

I was lucky enough to see this and picked it up the other day. Sadly the gunshop didnt know what it was and used it for spare parts.

It has a square bolt face and no crest or other markings.

I have been told it might be a commercial DWM sporter/Plezier rifle??

Id be glad for any input please.

Kindest regards to all,

Nik

Well, it looks to be a pretty standard M93 Boer Mauser which has a cut down fore end and is missing quite a few parts. I note that the stock appears to have a different serial number to the rifle's action - and the rifle receiver has had a pretty hard life; being cleaned back heavily. I suppose you could reconstitute what you have into a representative Boer Mauser if you could source the spare parts.
It looks as if the butt has some form of motif carved into it.
Regards
IL.

The markings on the receiver are odd for a Boer Mauser. The markings which should appear are as shown below. Note the serial number of 4 digits on the stock and receiver, and note the DWM inspection stamp; both are deeply struck and I would expect traces to remain even if the receiver was linished:

Now, I wasn't familiar with your proof marks and asked for help - I am informed as follows: the crown over N is a german nitro proof mark pre 1/1/1913. German proof markings before 1912 included the load and bullet type. Yours says : 2,4 grams of Gewehr Blättchen Pulver (rifle flake powder) and Stahl-mantel Geschoss (steel jacketed bullet). This might pin down the year of proof to 1912 as the crown over N was used from 1912 but after 1912 they stopped putting the powder details, but kept the bullet type and added the bullet weight.
So to me the stock is consistent with a cut down Boer Mauser stock, but the barrelled action is a mystery.

Thank you guys, much appreciated.

I own both an OVS and a "B" series and as you say the markings are completely different.

If its not a Boer rifle, its not worth the effort and will e consigned to the bin.

I think the stock is likely Boer. The pseudo-plezier Mauser style of cutting down (see photos below), the serial number, and the carved initials on the rhs of the butt all speak Afrikaans to me...
