Below is a selection of James Dudson's "Jasper Ware" patriotic pieces. Jasper Ware has been described as "the poor man's Wedgwood".

Blue and white jasper ware milk jug (with pewter lid), with portraits of "LORD KITCHENER OF KHARTOUM" and "LORD ROBERTS OF KANDAHAR". Base impressed: "DUDSON ENGLAND". 150 mm (excluding lid).

Green and white jasper ware biscuit barrel, with portraits of "LORD KITCHENER OF KHARTOUM" and "LORD ROBERTS OF KANDAHAR". Base impressed: "DUDSON ENGLAND / O B". 164 mm.

Pale blue and white jasper ware milk jug with portraits of "SIR REDVERS BULLER" and "COL. BADEN POWELL". Base impressed: "DUDSON ENGLAND / RD NO 350800". 194mm.

Three Jasper ware teapots with portraits of "LORD KITCHENER OF KHARTOUM" and "LORD ROBERTS OF KANDAHAR" or "COL BADEN POWELL" and "SIR REDVERS BULLER". Base of each impressed: "DUDSON ENGLAND / B O". Undersides of lids impressed: "JAMES DUDSON / LICENSED BY THE PATENTEES / HANLEY STAFFORDSHIRE". 130mm. Dudson also produced smaller 116 mm high versions of these.

A pair of blue and white jasper ware vases, with portraits of "LORD KITCHENER OF KHARTOUM" and "LORD ROBERTS OF KANDAHAR". Bases impressed: "DUDSON ENGLAND". 179mm.

And here are a couple of the sprig moulds used to create the relief portraits on the above pots.

Copeland did something similar, but opted for the colour of the moment. At the beginning of 1900 khaki became the new fad, everything from ties to teapots being made in this shade.

Each with impressed factory marks to base: "COPELAND ENGLAND" or "COPELAND LATE SPODE".

Here is a small selection of terracotta pieces.

The Buller plaque has impressed maker's name "A. George", possibly a Devon potter (312 X 393 mm; formerly in the Ken Griffith Collection). The pair of large busts are marked "Enfield Co Ltd, Accrington" (320 mm). The small bust of Lord Roberts (one of a pair, the other being of General Buller), is unmarked, but it has been suggested that it could be Watcombe Ware or the work of the Torquay Terracotta Company (160 mm).

I have seen reports that, on the taking of Pretoria, 6,000 small German terracotta busts of Kruger were discovered, each marked "President, Cape Colony". And another German consignment, sent to Port Elizabeth for the English market, arrived with the name Buller on the Baden-Powell busts and vice versa.

One of the most striking pieces to come out of the Anglo-Boer War was this Doulton figure, by John Broad. Pieter Oosthuizen used an example for the cover of his book "Boer War Memorabilia - The Collectors' Guide" (1987). Back in the late 80s, I remember Pieter having four of these on a shelf in his shop in the Georgian Village, Camden Passage. With hindsight I should have purchased so much more. Amongst other things, there was a complete OVS tea service, which Pieter believed had come from one of the Free State consulates.

Signed on base: "J.Broad Sc / ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND". 309 mm high.

Here are some more Doulton pieces. All with bases marked "DOULTON LAMBETH ENGLAND".

The tyg was made in two sizes, the larger an impressive 260 mm high. Decorated with crossed Union Jack & Royal Standard over a bust of Queen Victoria facing left, and the words "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HOISTING / OF THE BRITISH FLAG AT PRETORIA / GOD SAVE THE QUEEN". With rose, thistle, leek & shamrock, representing England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland.

The jug is similarly decorated and, like the tygs, is seen with both painted and unpainted flags: "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HOISTING OF THE FLAG AT PRETORIA".
