AU TRANSVAAL

Histoire d’une Mule

3. On me transporte dans un mauvais bateau, où j’ai été sffreusement malade, j’ai juré que les Anglais me le paieraient cher.
4. Premiers effets de notre mauvaise humeur.

Made at the Longwy enamel factory, Meurthe et Moselle, France.

Paul Kruger by James Hadley

Base with maker's mark: "HADLEY'S / WORCESTER / ENGLAND / JH&S" (used between 1896 & 1902). Reverse signed "Hadley". 206mm high.
In 1902 Royal Worcester took Hadley's to court over the use of the word "Worcester" on their wares. The ruling was in Royal Worcester's favour, so the above mark was changed that year.
In July 1902 the court ruled that Locke and hence Hadley ‘be perpetually restrained from selling…any goods made of china or porcelain…in connection with the word ‘Worcester’ without clearly distinguishing such goods from the goods of the plaintiffs’ Hadley agreed with Royal Worcester to use a new mark with a ribbon enclosing the words ‘Worcester, England’ (Royal Worcester Museum).

After James Hadley's death in 1903, Royal Worcester bought the Hadley factory (in June 1905), and continued the production of his designs. Any examples of this figure with Royal Worcester marks would therefore have been made after 1905.

This figure was produced in various finishes/colours.

These figures of Kruger and Chamberlain were sold as pairs, each set coming with a fitted porcelain base, into which the two models slotted. I have only seen two pairs in 40 years, neither of which had the base. Pieter Oosthuizen's pair was sold at the Spink Centenary auction in 1999 (split into lots 23 & 32; sold for £680).
The finish of these two Hadley pieces is remarkably similar to that used by Royal Worcester on their figurines. Perhaps this had some bearing on the decision the latter made to take the former to court.

Below are three whisky flagons by Taylor Tunnicliffe Co., Hanley. Each with silver collar and stopper, with Birmingham hallmarks for 1899 and maker's initials "WB&Co" (for William Briggs & Co). The jugs came in two sizes and could be purchased with medallion portraits of Kitchener, Roberts or Baden-Powell. Each had the word "WHISKY", in gilt lettering, applied to the reverse.

Bases marked with maker's initials "TTC" and model number "8855".

Neville, never seen flasks like this before. The one missing is Winston Churchill. There is no one who did more for the prosperity of the British liquor industry than him. (Smethwick, this is an exaggeration for comic effect)
