Some of the most substantial Anglo-Boer War commemoratives came in cast-iron form. Pub tables, stoves, umbrella stands and even laundry mangles were produced for those with disposable income.
Below is a group of five umbrella stands, all made by BICLAM. They have consecutive model numbers:
No. 411 - "THE MAN IN KHAKI" (Registered Design No. 363490 - 4th quarter of 1900)
No. 412 - "THE HANDY MAN" (Registered Design No. 363491 - 4th quarter of 1900)
No. 413 - "B.P." (Registered Design No. 363492 - 4th quarter of 1900)
No. 414 - "BOBS" (Registered Design No. 363493 - 4th quarter of 1900)
No. 415 - ?????
No. 416 - "WHITE" (Registered Design No. 364379 - 1st quarter of 1901)
I have the BICLAM supplementary catalogue for 1901, advertising their range of tables, show stands, umbrella stands, etc., but unfortunately their ABW output is not listed. So, which British general featured on umbrella stand No. 415, and was it similar in design to the first four or to General White?
The stands came in a choice of finishes: black, bronze, or "in colours". As can be seen, this group includes one bronzed example (Bobs), and two coloured (The Handy Man & Man in Khaki). Sadly General White has had a gold respray, and Baden-Powell has been sand-blasted and polished with stove black.
The BICLAM Supplementary Catalogue, printed during August 1901.
