I am trying to research a man who is named in London Irish Rifles records as

Orderly Edgar S PERRY

He served in the Imperial Yeomanry Hospital QSA, ‘CC’, ‘OFS’, ‘Trans’, ‘SA 01’ Pretoria Staff Roll 15/07/1901

His enlistment papers do not seem to be with the enlistment papers of the Imperial Yeomanry on Ancestry.
So I have a couple of questions hopefully someone can help me with.
1. Were Orderlies in the Imp Yeo Hosp enlisted with a number?
2. Are enlistment papers for the Imp Yeo Hospital available?
3. Any idea how I can confirm Orderly Edgar S Perry's middle name
(according to Ancestry its either Edgar Samuel PERRY B. Hackney 1875 or Edgar Statham PERRY B. Marylebone 1883)
Any help GREATLY appreciated !
thanks

Mr Geezer,

Hope you are well.

I cant answer all your questions but may be able to move you1 step fwd.

1. Ive seen several QSAs to IYH staff / Orderlies and none have a number. This may have been because IYH was a private hospital and orderlies were enlisted direct, rather than drafted to RAMC.
Theres an example of the short contract for orderlies (running for 12 months) in Howes IYH book held in pdf on this site.

2. I was hoping that IYH enlistment / nominal Rolls would be in the national archive but your message suggests not. Though it doesnt provide the middle name you are looking for 2 sources of confirmation on IYH staff are :

Howes report p. 175 (Col Sloggets report ) which lists all orderlies for Pretoria hospital and
Yeoman of the Karoo by Willis et al - which deals the Deelfontein hospital ( although for the latter this lists only Doctors, Nurses and specialists by name and frustratingly defaults to "76 St Johns Brigade and 34 Supernumeraries" for other ranks).

On the Howe report E Perry was with the Pretoria hospital in the Eastwood District for 3 months - March 29th 1901 until 28 June 1901.
For awareness the IYH committee transferred the HP to govt ownership in April 1901 prior to closure in Oct 1901.

Hope this is useful

Your reply is greatly appreciated thank you.
Information on Orderly Perry has definitely been hard to obtain as opposed to the usual Imp Yeo enlistments.
Thanks again.

Just thought. The medal rolls for the Imp Yeo Hosp are on line but I can’t find enlistment papers.
