Someone contacted me today about an Elandslaagte recipient who has been killed by lightning in 1901. This got me thinking how prevalent a cause of death this was during the Boer War?

There are some 798 deaths caused by accidental causes and some of these will be the result of lightning strikes. Steve Watt lists the category Killed by Lightning (KBL) but gives no summary total for the number who lost their life in this way.

As an example, on 19th/20th December 1901, there was an ambush of some troops in bad weather. Creswicke says (Vol 7 p160) that 3 of the Inniskilling Dragoons were killed that evening.

In another report (Romer p119), the sentry on guard at the Court House in Krugersdorp was struck but not killed by lightning.

Thanks for these, Mike. I hadn't realised how many men had suffered these kinds of fates.
