Quoted in J F C Fuller's, The Last of the Gentlemen's Wars: A Subaltern's Journal of the War in South Africa 1899-1902 page 163, is the story that Captain Reynolds and his men of the SAC moved from the Lace Mines towards Bothaville to attack the Boer laager there. Initially successful, he was pushed back when a group of Boers crossed the river and threatened the rear of his position. The Boers had approached unnoticed behind a swarm of locust!
